Here at momox GmbH, we give second-hand items a new home. As a leading online selling service for pre-owned books, DVDs/Blu-rays, CDs, games and clothing, we give individuals the opportunity to sell their used items quickly and easily at a fair price. Customers can also purchase quality-tested second-hand items at low prices themselves. On average, every German owns 200 books, DVDs/Blu-rays and CDs. Half of these are waiting patiently on over-filled shelves to be used again. momox helps you to find a new home for all those items by offering an alternative for fast and safe selling.

Using ISBN, EAN or an item description, the customer immediately receives the purchase price on momox.de. Customers using the free momox app can easily scan the item’s barcode. This allows you to check and sell a large quantity of items within a short time. Afterwards, the customer will send all sold items to us by using the free shipping label that we offer. Once we receive the items in one of our two logistics centres that are located in Neuenhagen near Berlin and Leipzig we check the quality of those items. A few days later, the customer will receive the payment.

All items purchased will be reused. After a strict quality control, the items are sold on medimops.de and ubup.com as well as on Amazon and eBay. medimops is the online shop with the largest selection of used books, DVDs/Blu-rays, CDs and games. Customers can save up to 70% compared to the original price. All second-hand fashion is sold on ubup.com. Loved brands like Espirit, Mexx, Boss and adidas can be purchased up to 90% cheaper. Selling no longer needed items and buying second-hand products contributes significantly towards protecting the environment. Manufacutring new products requires growing quantities of precious resources. It takes 11,000 litres of water to produce a single pair of jeans for example! The production of paper requires high quantities of raw materials, puts pressure on the environment, and consumes lots of energy! Is this really necessary? History

15 years ago, the momox success story emerged out of an everyday scenario in Berlin, and is still going strong today…

 2004 A flea market visit in Kreuzberg, Berlin, triggered the idea behind an online shopping service, which was brought to life by Christian Wegner just a short time later. This business model operated in the black from day one, and is continuing to grow. In the same year, the first warehouses of 20m² were rented out and workers were employed. Media items that have been purchased are sold via platforms such as eBay and Amazon.


2006  In response to growing demand, momox.de is launched as the first purchasing portal for used CDs and DVDs within German-speaking territory. The company’s centrepiece is its in-house price algorithm, which offers a fixed price for individual items depending on different factors.


2007  The momox family expands: medimops.de, the first online shop for the sale of used media items, is launched.


2008  Alongside CDs and DVDs, the range is extended to include a books category too.


2009  Official founding of momox GmbH. The additional product categories of computer and console games are added. Additional warehouse facilities in Berlin are rented.


2010  The first investors (Christoph Janz and Mark Gazecki) join the company, adding financial capital as well as comprehensive expertise, thanks to their experience as internet entrepreneurs.
At the end of the same year, Acton Capital Partners (Burda Digital Ventures) also invest in the company. This allows us to build on our growth and market dominance in the purchasing sector. Acquisition of the new logistics centre in Neuenhagen near Berlin with a logistics area of 10,000m².


2011  Expansion of our purchasing service into Austria, France and Great Britain. Alongside Neuenhagen, our second logistics centre in Leipzig, with an area of 40,000m², is put into operation. momox moves into the former Quelle area – Europe’s largest logistics centre – to meet the constantly growing demand for logistics capacity.


2013  The former Ricardo manager Heiner Kroke joins as the new CEO of momox. Within the executive board, Christian Wegner now dedicates himself entirely to business development. Rental of an additional 20,000m² logistics area in Leipzig. momox begins purchasing fashion: purchase of branded clothing from various categories, including shoes, jackets and handbags.


 2014  Double-digit growth and a profitable business year with positive cashflow. The business attains an annual turnover of 80 million euros. Our online second-hand shop ubup.com is launched in February. The start of a successful TV campaign within the context of a media-for-equity deal with GMPVC German Media Pool. The start of our momox-shop.fr in France as well as additional marketplace activities on Fnac and PriceMinister.


2015  50% growth: the 100 million euro mark is significantly surpassed and profitability increases in all areas disproportionately. Further development of the fashion category. We are able to triple the previous year’s turnover in this category. We also register strong growth in France, Austria and Great Britain. Meanwhile every 5th euro is earned there. Launch of the new momox app for iOS and Android in May. Sales can now be completed entirely using the free app. Strong growth of our own online shop medimops.de. Number of employees grows to around 1,000.


2016 Double-digit growth for the seventh consecutive year. Turnover increases to around 150 million euros. Rapid growth in international markets, with a 27% share of the overall result. France registers strong growth both in purchasing and sales, and is a growth driver alongside fashion. Our own platforms medimops.de, ubup.com and momox-shop.fr grow disproportionally. momox launches its first TV adverts for medimops and ubup as well as a new TV advert for momox.de.


2017 The company generates a turnover of 150 million euros and records very good growth in international markets, particularly France. The new category fashion continues to be a growth driver and is growing at almost three-digit rates in Germany.


2018 momox generates a turnover of 200 million euros. Since the beginning, more then 190 million items were purchased and sold. The fashion category records a growth of 50%, the online shops strongly grow in Germany and France. momox is the biggest retailer worldwide on Amazon and on eBay in Germany. The e-commerce investor Verdane Capital X invests in momox.

Management / CEO

Heiner Kroke

The top manager brings with him many years of experience in leading positions in e-commerce companies. Most recently, Heiner Kroke was CEO of the internet auction website Ricardo for four years. In this role, he was responsible for the business of all brands and online plattforms in Switzerland and numerous other Western Europe countries. Before this he held various leading positions at eBay Germany, including Director for Corporate Development, Product Marketing and AdSales as well as Strategic Partnerships. As CEO of Kijiji – eBay’s regional plattform for small ads – he established local consumer-to-consumer-orientated networks.

Founder

Christian Wegner

Pioneer of the re-commerce business. In 2004, Christian Wegner, a trained wholesaler and export merchant, became self-employed in the purchasing and sales of goods, and successfully founded momox GmbH in 2006 as the first online purchasing service for second-hand media items. He programmed the momox price algorithm which is still the basis of the momox success story as a market leader today.

CFO

Christian von Hohnhorst

Christian von Hohnhorst brings with him many years of experience as a finance expert as well as M&A know-how. Most recently he was CFO of Gutefrage.net, and responsible for all of the group’s plattforms. His career of almost 20 years began in 1995 at Mannesmann Demag AG as Head of Controlling. In 2000 he became a commercial manager at StepStone before taking over the position as CFO as which he significantly contributed to the international growth and financial success of the group. As CFO at momox he is responsible for the finance department of all brands.

CMO

Dr. Dimitrios Tritaris

Dimitrios Tritaris boasts more than 20 years of professional experience in leading positions within various areas of the digital economy. Most recently he was Managing Director of the Greek Yellow Pages, responsible for the digital transformation of the company. Prior to this he was Managing Director of the most well-known online small ads group xe.gr as well as the online auction platform ricardo.gr in Greece. Tritaris also brings with him more than 10 years of experience in various leading positions in the USA and Switzerland in the semiconductor industry. At momox, he is responsible for the areas of marketing & sales, pricing, business intelligence and customer support.

CTO

Marco Trettin

Before joining momox in September 2013, Marco Trettin was Scrum Master at Copra System GmbH and responsible for the introduction of agile methods and the restructuring of IT in agile teams. He also drove further development of technical and product visions. As Chief Technology Officer at momox, he is responsible for all technology and product areas for the brands momox, medimops and ubup. He also bears technical responsibility for the 4 momox locations.
